The Guardian switched their backend from Java to Scala in 2011. But why? Scala was created with the intent of addressing the concerns developers had with Java. Developers are taught to use the most suitable language for the task. But where does Scala excel? Scala is used by the likes of Twitter, Siemens and Sony to develop commercial software and production systems. But what can Scala provide you? Opportunities. Scala's use has grown by a factor of 10 over the last year and has matured into a solid production language. Therefore now has never been a better time!

My client is a UK leader in large scale digital solutions who are looking to hire skilled Scala/Java Engineers of all levels. The roles are part of an enormous recruitment drive aimed at improving the way they deliver content to their enterprise customers.

The role is based in Worthing and will see you join an embedded engineering function tasked with putting software engineering and professionalism at the heart of delivery. In terms of customers, you will work on-site with enterprise customers to achieve their digital transformation. Not only will these projects include collaboration with other talented engineers, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects. Giving you the chance to have exposure to a broad arsenal of technology.

In terms of requirements, the ideal candidate would be able to offer a range of skills. However rather than just regurgitate the Job description, the client has highlighted to me some key skills they are looking for.

Scala/Java- My client is looking for candidates who have experience in Scala OR Java developers looking to cross train. All training is paid and will give you the tools to work as a Scala developer.

Eager to learn new skills - My client prides themselves on being able to deliver on award winning T training. Learning new skills and technology keeps us keen and adaptable. Which ultimately gives you wider career opportunities.

In terms of culture, you will struggle to find somewhere better. Year on year my client invests thousands into training their employees from the latest and greatest tech to leadership skills. Importantly, this is available to all. Which gives you the chance to cross-train and work on them technologies you have been itching to implement, for example a direct route into DevOps is one of the many further opportunities available. In addition you will have the opportunity to attend conferences, support tech meetups and take part in hackathons.

They offer a base salary of up to £75,000 (DOE) as well as the opportunity to work remotely when not on-site. In addition pension and healthcare.
